You’re not alone if you’ve ever looked around to see who’s outside before opening the garage door. This area of the house collects anything – from toys and sports equipment to hardware and garden supplies, some of which have possibly not been used in years. Fortunately, garage organization changes all that. You might even have room inside for your car when you’re done organizing! At Just Organized by Taya, garage organization is a project we undertake often (check out our portfolio for some before and afters from those jobs) and we see just what a positive difference our work makes. Here’s a look at just some ways garage organization can make a huge difference in your life!
Your Whole Garage Will Look Cleaner and More Spacious
Yours is not the only home with a messy garage on the block. The space is merely a pass-through from your car (if you are lucky, and you have room for it) to your home, and a place to store outdoor equipment. It makes sense, really. So its tidiness (or lack of it) does not affect your lifestyle as much as it would be affected by a messy home. This is a bad combination, but an easy one to fix.
No matter how many times you sweep the garage floor, clutter looks dirty, and it can also attract creepy crawling creatures such as bugs and mice! The whole space looks neat when you organize your garage and remains dirt-free and, perhaps more importantly, bug-free.
If it looks more spacious in an organized garage, that is because it is. Box stacks and loose objects that lie around take up more space than wall-mounted storage systems, cabinets and shelves that take advantage of wall space and keep stuff off the floor.
Your Pricey Stuff Will Be Better Protected
For such a messy room, the garage certainly does hold some expensive stuff. Bicycles do not come cheap, and power tools or lawn and garden equipment do not either. And then there’s the most expensive one right there too: your car.
With an organized garage, pricey stuff stays safer. The shiny paint of your car will be not be chipped from a bicycle crashing against it, or from your children “accidentally” riding into it with their scooter, electric toy car or tricycle. You’ll get rid of toys your kids have grown out of during the process of organizing your garage, and you’ll find a safe space for what they still use.
It is possible to securely store other tools, outdoor furniture and lawn equipment inside cabinets or on properly affixed wall-mounted storage accessories so that they will not topple off a shelf or land in a heap in the corner.
Dangerous Stuff Will Be Stored More Safely
Often, garages have some pretty dangerous things in them that you want to keep away from the prying eyes and tiny hands of children. Think any gas or electric garden equipment, such as a chainsaw or hedge trimmer, that you own and probably have stuffed in there.
Power tools, such as drills and circular saws, also need protection. Not to mention any fertilizers that you store in this room, or rock salt and ice melt, which is terribly toxic for any fur kids in your family is they get hold of it.
You Will Actually Be Able to Find Stuff
Remember that time you spent an hour in your garage looking for a Phillips head screwdriver, roll of duct tape or the cleaning attachments for your utility vacuum? And then went out and bought new stuff because you couldn’t find what you were looking for, even though you were certain it was there. Somewhere.
In a messy garage, little things can hide in plain sight. When the space is tidy, things are just in plain sight.
Your garage storage options are almost limitless—small baskets, bins and hooks on a slat wall system, or cabinets and drawers as part of an organized workbench. That means less time spent looking for your things. You might even save money on duplicate items such as weed trimmer line, nails, tape and screws all because you can now find what you already have in your newly organized garage.
Life Will Be Better After Garage Organization
Everybody should get organized. And can. The bigger trick is staying organized. You’re more inclined to do so when something is easy. This applies to everything from hanging up your coat and sorting the mail to putting stuff back in the garage neatly. That’s where professional garage organization really helps. We – as professional organizers – leave you with a plan for keeping things organized THAT WILL WORK.
Instead of dumping them on the garage floor, easy garage storage allows children to put their toys away, which makes it easier for you to put the drill back in its place and set all the vacuum tools on the shelf where they belong.
The warm weather we enjoy in Houston for much of the year makes the garage essentially a revolving door. Kids are running in and out collecting bikes and balls, and you’re going to spend weekends working on projects and cleaning the car, presumably. Wouldn’t opening the door and not having to worry about what the neighbors might think be great? Much more importantly, imagine a space where everything has a place, and there’s actually room left over for your car!
