Listen to this post!
Almost all of us of us enjoy holiday decorations and decking the halls for the winter holiday celebrations. But how can you organize your holiday decorations so you can easily find them when you need them? Holiday home decorating organization is the key to stress-free holidays!
Taya’s Top Tips For Holiday Home Decorating Organization
Getting Your Holiday Decorations Together
If you have a large or scattered collection of holiday decorations the thought of going through them all at once may be overwhelming or too time-consuming. Start small and holiday home decorating organization won’t seem quite so bad.
Begin by gathering the holiday decorations you have for the next approaching holidays, which in this case is likely to be Thanksgiving, Christmas and/or Hanukkah. Search your home for EVERY holiday decoration you can find. Some may be hiding in the garage, tucked away on closet shelves, and lurking in the kitchen, tucked away in those ‘junk’ drawers.
Sort like items with like items. You may be surprised by how many duplicate items you have! while some duplicates are a must for holiday decorating – tinsel garlands, holiday lights etc. too many of the same item may mean that your holiday decorating will lack visual interest and variety.
Holiday Decorating Begins!
Next, once you have all the supplies you need – or most of them anyway – it’s time to decorate your home! Make sure you only use decorations that truly make you happy. Holiday decorating – especially in a year like 2020 – is all about creating a warm, happy vibe throughout your home as well as an aesthetically pleasing one.
With this in mind never hold onto decorations if:
- You keep them out of guilt because they were a gift but really don’t like them.
- They don’t match your intended current holiday decorating style
- They have sad or unpleasant memories attached to them.
- You have downsized and they are too big for your new home
- You’re only keeping them only because someone paid a lot of money for them once
Holidays should be happy occasions, and holiday decorations are part of the fun. Donate all decorations you don’t love to your local charity.
Holiday Decorating Organization Basics
How to Hang a Wreath on a Door
To hang a wreath on a door—without leaving an ugly nail hole—drive a small screw into the top of the door, leaving the head protruding slightly. Tie a piece of fishing line to the screw, tie the other end to your wreath and then drive the screw in completely.
If you rent, or do not want to make a hole in your door – then try a heavy duty Command hanger, ensuring you match the weight you need to support with the right product.
Make Easy-Clip Tree Ornaments
The wire hooks that come with Christmas tree ornaments can be hard to use and can scratch the ornaments. Instead of wire hangers, use plastic-coated paper clips to hang your ornaments.
These paper clips are stronger and easy to use, and best of all, they won’t scratch the ornaments, so you can leave them attached when you pack the ornaments away at the end of each season. If you pick up some colored ones you can even match your hangers to the baubles they suspend.
Test Every Holiday Light
Test your lights before you go to the effort of stringing them on the tree or climbing a ladder to hang them outside. When the season is over, plan to coil them into a 5-gallon pail to keep them tangle-free for next year.
Zip-Tie Your Holiday Decorations
Zip ties are a simple way to string holiday lights and garlands on banisters and fences without marring the railing with nail marks. Zip ties are sold at most home centers and online and, like the plastic paper clips, you can choose the colors that blend in best with your decor. You’ll After the holidays, simply snip the ties off with scissors.
Create Interchangeable Holiday Candles
Customize plain pillar candles with colorful ribbon trims wrapped around their bases. Pin the ribbon directly into the candle with small stick pins or use a decorative pin to add further flair. From classic holiday motifs to tartan plaids and velvets, you can change from day to day in the same way you change your outfit!
Use Holiday Gifts as Home Decor
Unless you have ‘Santa age’ children use holiday gifts you will be giving this season as décor in your home before you give them instead of hiding them in the closet or under a bed to get them out of the way. Make them beautiful, and enjoy them yourself for as long as you can. Choose a coordinated group of papers, bows, and adornments that look great in your home, and stack them throughout your house on side tables.
