The outdoor space around our homes has taken on new importance over the last year as we all, not really out of choice perhaps, had to spend more time there. A great outdoor space to retreat to in the evening, or hang out on the weekend has always been a priority for many, but now it’s even more so, even as restrictions related to COVID-19 are ending.

However, clutter and a lack of organization also often become a problem when you make more use of your home’s outdoor space. However, you do not have to let it spoil your enjoyment of the space, or your home’s overall curb appeal. Here are some tips for making use of clever storage solutions and other ‘tricks’ to add function and style to your deck, patio or garden.

Declutter First

Before you do anything else, you should declutter your deck, patio or other outdoor living space. Old toys, old tools, damaged outdoor furniture and other clutter needs to go before you begin adding new storage and functionality.

Do not make the mistake of simply taking things off the deck and storing them in the basement! Make those three all important piles that are key to any decluttering project – keep, donate and trash – and then sort your belongings into them. If you are going to donate things, do it right away. If there are things to be trashed, plan a trip to the dumpster/recycling center that same day.

Once things are decluttered, you can then begin adding more useful storage, and maybe even some new furniture, to the space:

Repurpose a Bar Cart

Make use of an inexpensive bar cart to serve as extra deck storage and a side table surface on the go.

The bottom shelf can be used to display potted plants, candles, or entertaining items, while the top shelf can be used as a serving surface or a place to set a glass. The cart can be moved to accommodate any outdoor activity because it is on wheels.

Create Grab and Go Storage

Outdoor supplies can be stored in an empty spot on your home’s exterior. Plastic bins and lawn chairs are easily accessible with the help of simple hooks. Organizing and sorting your supplies is a breeze with sticker labels. Do you need to transport your supplies? Take the plastic bin off the hook and walk away.

Add a Pop-Up Table

An over-the-rail countertop will give your deck more useful surface area. Use the space as a work surface, a serving station, or a place to display potted plants. To use the countertop as a dining area, scoot deck furniture close to the railing. Make sure, however, to choose a surface that is both weather-resistant and easily cleanable.

Add Travelling Tables

You can also make outdoor dining simple by using a rolling cart with a folding tabletop attached. Dishware and utensils should be stored below the cart, and serving should be done on the top. Lunching with a friend on the deck? To make a small bistro table, extend the side panels.

Go For Furniture That Does Double Duty

If you are shopping for new outdoor furniture, look for options that offer style and storage! Storage ottoman benches, outdoor coffee tables with storage, even chairs with attached organizers can all make a big difference when it comes to maintaining an organized outdoor space.

Add a Ladder Planter

Love greenery but don’t have much free space on that newly organized deck or patio to add much? Ladder planters are compact, inexpensive and can be used to create a ‘green show’ that is truly stunning!

Create an Attractive Fire Fuel Station

Have a fire pit? Make use of a small section of exterior wall space for a firewood storage area. It adds visual interest to the wall while also ensuring that there is enough wood for one or two fires. To keep the wood dry and usable at all times, hang the hooks on a wall under an overhang. To keep the supply going, replace the wood as you use it with new logs.
