Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... |
Christmas is over and 2023 is here . It will also soon be time to pack away all the holiday decorations and return your home to its pre-holiday state. However, if your house is like most people’s, over the past few weeks you’ve added quite a bit of extra stuff to your home and it’s time for some post Christmas decluttering while you pack all of that seasonal stuff away.
In the spirit of new beginnings for 2023 why not make one of your resolutions to declutter your home and sort through all that new stuff and why not take advantage of the down time many of us have on those weekends in the odd time between New Year’s and the arrival of the spring to get started on the project?
Here are 5 top post Christmas decluttering tips and tricks to help you:
Post Christmas Decluttering: Seasonal Decorations
As you begin to put the holiday decorations away be a little more honest about them this year. Most of us have at least some decorations that have seen better days and really don’t need to be stored for yet another year.
Unless you have a really good reason for keeping them, which most of us don’t, purge those half functional lights, tangled tinsel strings and cracked ornaments from your collection before you start putting everything away. You’ll be freeing up storage space and you can have fun next year buying new decorations to replace what you purge.
Peaking of storage though, to preserve those decorations and trinkets you will be saving to decorate your home next holiday season, this is also the time to resolve to do so smarter this year.
If you want to keep all your ornaments in the same container, – a clear, sturdy plastic one like this is a good choice – but sorted by color, use clear gallon bags from your kitchen to separate them. Then next year, it’ll be super easy to assess your stash.
Those long strands of bead garlands? There is a better way to store those too, to prevent having to face a tangled mess next December. Prevent that mishap by storing your beads in a plastic water bottle — each container will hold two strings of beads!
Then there is your artificial Christmas tree. If you have the space in your basement, garage or attic to store it upright, why not simply shrink wrap it rather than trying to slot it back into a box? You could even leave all the decorations in place if you like!
Post Christmas Decluttering: Toys
Kids tend to get plenty of new toys for Christmas. But getting them all to fit on the toy shelves or in the toy box can be a battle and all too often some seem to take up residence on the floor, or other places they don’t belong, simply because there is no room for them.
Why not take the time to have your kids go through their toys, choose those they’ve outgrown and, if they are in decent shape, donate them to a local thrift store or kids charity? Doing so not only cuts down on clutter but blesses someone else! This may also be a great time to get started on some more serious new year playroom organization.
Post Christmas Decluttering: Clothes and Linens
Clothes are another common gift for kids and adults alike at Christmas so now is a good time for everyone to go through their drawers and closets to figure out what fits, what does not and what will never be worn again and make plans to either pass it on to friends or family, donate it or trash it.
It’s also a good time to go through you linen closet and remove any old sheets, towels, and washcloths. Many of us don’t think about purging those items and just keep using them over and over, even the ones with holes in them. But if you purge them now you’ll know what you need to replace when the white sales come around in January.
Post Christmas Decluttering: Kitchen
For most of us, our kitchens see more action over the holidays than they do throughout the rest of the year. So now’s the best time to go through your cabinets and drawers to purge them of all those extra plastic containers that held Christmas goodies that you know you’ll never use, those plates that got chipped, and yes, once again those linens that have seen better days
You should also take the time to do some pantry decluttering. If there re seasonal items (think cranberry sauce in cans) you want to save, but know you won’t be using for months, these can be shifted to the back, or to a higher shelf. But do check the expiration dates before you do, as these things do not last forever!
Bonus Christmas Decluttering: Home Office
As you will need to start getting all those records and documents ready to start filing your taxes now is the perfect time to declutter and organize your home office space.
Start by gathering all those papers, filing what you need into an organized file box or cabinet and shred the rest. Take stock of everything in your desk drawers, and on your desk, and throw away anything you have been holding onto you don’t need. Now is also a great time to take stock of the way your home office and functions, to determine if there are ways it can be reorganized to make your work day more efficient. It may also be a good time to take advantage of those January sales and replace your home office tech with something new (making sure to donate the old stuff)
