We’ve all seen those Pinterest pantries where every single spice is in a matching ‘luxury’ labeled jar. It’s a beautiful look, but let’s be real: when life is busy, labeling your entire existence can feel like just another chore on an already long list.
In my Calm Reset™ system, we talk about lowering “mental friction.” You don’t need to label everything to have an organized home. You just need to label the things that make you or your family stop and ask, “Where does this go?” or “What is in here?”
If you want the biggest bang for your organizational buck, here are the five things I recommend labeling first to keep chaos at bay.
1. Fridge Zones (Stop “The Shove”)
We’ve all done it: you come home with groceries and just shove things where they fit. Three days later, you’re buying a second jar of mayo because the first one is hiding behind a head of wilted lettuce. The Fix: Label the actual shelves or bins in your fridge—”Leftovers,” “Drinks,” “Snacks,” or “Dairy.” When there’s a designated spot, everyone in the house knows exactly where things belong. It ends the “Where’s the…?” questions before they start.
2. Opaque Storage Bins
Clear bins are great, but sometimes you need heavy-duty, solid-colored bins for the playroom, garage or attic. The problem? Once that lid goes on, the contents vanish from your memory. The Fix: Don’t just write “Decorations.” Get specific. “Halloween Porch Decor” or “Extra legos.” It saves you from hauling down three heavy boxes just to find one specific tablecloth.
3. Laundry Sorters
If you’re tired of being the only person who knows how to separate lights from darks, this is the solution. The Fix: Label your hampers or sorter sections: “Darks,” “Lights,” “Delicates,” or “Towels.” It turns a “mental task” into a simple visual one. It’s the easiest way to get the rest of the household to meet you halfway on laundry day.
4. The Linen Closet Shelves
Linen closets have a way of becoming a jumbled mountain of terrycloth. You fold a beautiful stack of hand towels, and five minutes later, someone pulls from the bottom and the whole thing topples. The Fix: Label the edge of the shelves. “Twin Sheets,” “Queen Sheets,” “Bath Towels.” When the shelf clearly states what belongs there, people are much more likely to put things back where they found them.
5. Mystery Cords and Chargers
Is it for the old Kindle? The little car vacuum? The LED Christmas lights? We all have that “drawer of doom” filled with tangled black cables and random chargers with different ‘ends’. The Fix: This is a tiny move with a huge payoff. Use a label or a piece of washi tape to wrap around the cord near the plug end. Trust me, you’ll be so grateful when you’re trying to find the specific charger for an air mattress at 10:00 PM.
The Bottom Line on Organizational Labels
Organizational Labels aren’t about being “perfect.” And they should not be for just for Instagram. They are about lowering the visual noise and sensory overload in your home so you can spend less time looking for stuff and more time actually enjoying your space.
Tools to Get the Job Done
Ready to start labeling? Here are a few of our favorite tools to help you get organized:
- Brother P-Touch Cube Plus: This is a game-changer for bulk labelling. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth, so you can design and print labels right from an app.
- Chalkboard Labels & Markers: Perfect for the kitchen or pantry. These look great on glass jars and are easily erasable.
- Clip-On Bin Labels: These are fantastic for baskets or fabric bins where a traditional sticker won’t stay put.
- Washi Tape: For a low-tech, colorful option—especially for those mystery cords—a roll of high-quality washi tape and a permanent marker are often all you need.
