When you live in a small space, it’s hard to fit everything you need into it. It’s an even bigger challenge to try to fit all in and make it look cute, but that’s what makes designing small spaces so exciting. These small space design ideas will make it feel so much bigger while maximizing style, whether you live in a studio apartment or want to get more out of a tiny room.
Dine Smaller
A dining table is a must, even if you do not have a formal dining room. In a small room – or a small space like the corner of a kitchen – ditch the giant dining table and by opting for a small, round dining table instead, give yourself some extra space.
Add a Day Bed
Have a tiny guest room that you don’t know how to make comfortable, let alone stylish? Add a day bed and watch your guest bedroom double in size. If you don’t have a designated guest room, this could also come in handy in your living room.
Elevate Your Viewing
A media console is the greatest waste of space in a tiny living room. Hang your TV on the wall or above a fireplace, and the available floor space will be restored. Just make sure you use the right mount, or have a professional help you, so you can ensure that the TV won’t fall.
Added bonus: Watching a wall-mounted TV adds some movie theater ambience to your room, a welcome addition when we just aren’t getting to the real thing right now! Just add popcorn and dim the lights and you’ll be ready to go!
Double Down on Double Duty Furniture
Pieces that can serve several purposes are key when redecorating a small space to get the most out of it. Find a table that can act as a desk and dining table, get a deep sofa that can double as a guest bed, or buy cubes that serve as a coffee table and bonus seats while guests are over.
Make Use of (Lots) Of Mirrors
It’s the oldest design trick in the book: Mirrors will make your small space feel larger, lighter, and airier. Better still you can find so many different ones that matching – or elevating – your current home decorating style will be easy.
Make Every Piece of Furniture Count
Choose furnishings that offer maximum functionality in minimal square footage. For example, instead of an end bench in your bedroom, opt for a desk with a small side chair. You can use it for work, getting ready, and more. Or instead of just a lamp, choose a lamp with shelving.
Go For a Neutral Look
Calm, even-toned rooms trick the eye into believing that they are more roomy than they are. To prevent the room from falling flat in terms of visual, make sure to incorporate a range of textures via throws, blankets, pillows and more.
Look to Your Windowsills
When there’s no room for an extra table in a small space, even a windowsill will provide extra storage space for decor, lighting, and other essentials. You can even use it to add an indoor garden to your space!
Add a Wall Desk
Still working at home with your laptop on the kitchen table because you think you don’t have space for a formal home office space? Think again. A mounted wall desk takes up way less room—and you can even mount shelves above it for even more storage space.
Let There Be Lots of Light
Good lighting will make or break any room–big or small. Make sure to especially pay attention to installing good lighting in smaller, cramped spaces like a bathroom with a tiny window. You can even consider adding a natural source of light like a sky tube if your home is laid out to be able to accommodate one.
