Starting your decluttering journey in the kitchen makes perfect sense – it’s where we spend significant time and where organization directly impacts our daily efficiency.

The kitchen is where daily life happens – morning coffee, family meals, homework sessions, and late-night snacks. As a professional organizer, I’ve seen how transformative these first five organizing tasks can be. So, with that in mind, let’s dive into your first week of our 2025 January Decluttering Challenge.

Day 1: The Great Tupperware Match-Up

We all know that cabinet – the one where plastic containers and lids go to hide from their mates. It’s usually stuffed full, yet somehow we can never find a matching set when we need one. This is one of the most common kitchen frustrations I see in clients’ homes.

Start by pulling everything out and matching pairs. You might be surprised by how many orphaned pieces you find. This is also the perfect time to evaluate each container’s condition – those stained from tomato sauce, warped from too many microwave sessions, or scratched beyond recognition can go.

Pro Tip: Keep only what you regularly use. In my experience, most families need far fewer containers than they keep. Think about your typical leftover patterns and storage needs.

Day 2: Confronting the Junk Drawer Reality

Ah, the infamous junk drawer. Every home has one (or several!), and there’s no shame in that. This drawer often becomes a catch-all for life’s odds and ends – long dead phone chargers, spare batteries, random screws, takeout menus from 2019, and at least three tape measures.

Empty it completely – and prepare to be amazed by what you find. Sort items into clear categories: office supplies, tools, manuals, etc. This is where brutal honesty comes in handy. Those mystery keys you’ve kept for five years? If you haven’t needed them by now, you probably never will.

Pro Tip: Use drawer organizers to maintain your newly organized space. Without them, even the best-organized junk drawer will return to chaos within weeks.

Day 3: The Pots and Pans Purge

This task often brings up feelings about cooking habits versus aspirations. Maybe you’re storing three woks but actually order takeout five nights a week. Or perhaps you’re keeping that enormous turkey roaster that only sees action once a year.

As you evaluate each piece, think about your actual cooking patterns. That fancy copper pan you never use because it requires special care? The pot that’s slightly warped but you’ve been making do? Today’s the day to be realistic about what serves you and what’s just taking up valuable space.

Pro Tip: Store lids vertically using a rack or organizer – this simple change can transform your cabinet organization.

Day 4: Silverware Drawer Serenity

This drawer gets opened multiple times daily, yet we often ignore its organization. Beyond just sorting spoons from forks, think about how you use this space. Are your most-used items easily accessible? Are you storing rarely-used serving pieces in prime real estate?

Take everything out and assess what you actually need for daily use. Those fancy appetizer forks you got for your wedding might be better stored elsewhere. Remember, every time you open this drawer, you should feel calm, not frustrated.

Pro Tip: Consider keeping special occasion pieces in a separate location. Your everyday drawer should be for, well, every day.

Day 5: The Truth About Kitchen Towels

Kitchen towels are often overlooked in organization projects, but they’re essential to daily function. Over time, we accumulate far more than we need, keeping stained, torn, or worn-out towels “just in case.”

Sort your towels by purpose – cleaning rags versus hand-drying towels. Be honest about condition and quantity. Those stained towels you hide when company comes over? Time to repurpose them as garage rags or let them go entirely.

Pro Tip: Create designated spaces for different types of towels. Clean hand towels shouldn’t mingle with cleaning rags.
