Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Do you have family or friends coming to visit soon, and your guest room is disorganized? This is a typical issue with home organization. It’s more common this year as the holidays approach, as last year saw many people stay home for the holidays.

Pandemics aside, in between visitors, it’s very common for the place where you host guests in your home to become cluttered. Which is an issue in itself, as clutter is never a good thing. Whether it’s a spare room, bonus room, or designated guest bedroom, the space may rapidly become a dumping ground for miscellaneous objects throughout the year.

Even though the holidays are almost upon us at this point, there is still time to organize your guest bedroom and create a space that will make your holiday guests feel comfortable and welcomed. Here are my top tips for guest bedroom organization to help you do just that.

  1. Organize Your Guest Room with the Hospitality of a Hotel in Mind.

You don’t have to think five-star hotel, but keeping the basics of a good three-star hotel in mind as you organize your guest room is a good idea. People usually hate to think that they are imposing on the household they are a guest in, and while you no doubt will be happy to spend lots of time with your guests, do try to give them some sense of independence.

  1. Declutter the Guest Room.

This is the biggie for many people. If you only host guests a few times a year, the chances are good that the guest bedroom really has become a dumping ground for everything that you meant to find a proper place for – or should probably have gotten rid of – over the course of the year.

Decluttering your guest room – going through the basic process of sorting everything into those keep, toss, donate piles and then actually following through on the actions each of them call for – will not only help you create that space guests will love but also get you one step closer to a really impressive achievement: a clutter-free home.

  1. Make Room for Their Clothes.

Living out of a suitcase sucks. This is especially true over the holidays, when guests have probably brought some of their best clothes with them to wear at the big holiday dinner and to seasonal parties.

Ideally, you’ll already have a small closet – or at least a chest of drawers – in place in your guest room that your guests can make use of, and you’ll just need to ensure that they are empty and clean. Make sure there are hangers and that drawers are lined with a scented (but not too scented) liner for that hotel touch I mentioned earlier.

If there is not a closet, and you can’t borrow one from elsewhere in the house, a temporary closet like these can be an answer for this holiday season. And regardless of the closet situation, if you have the space try to offer your guests a small travel ironing board (and iron of course) so that they can look and feel their best when they don those fancy duds.

  1. Make Sure the Bedding is Clean and Comfortable

Clean, comfortable bedding is a must. If the stuff currently in place has seen better days, consider investing in a new bed set. You don’t have to go all out on high thread count cotton sheets (although those are VERY nice), there are some great affordable options out there, and try to ensure that everything matches.

Adding a few extra blankets for your guests use is a nice touch too, as whatever the temperature outside some people sleep hot, some people sleep cold, and there really is nothing worse than dealing with feeling too warm/too chilly when you are trying to get a good night’s sleep away from home.

  1. Help Your Guests Stay Comfortably Connected

Keep a functional lamp, alarm clock, a box of tissues, and an outlet or charging station for laptops and mobile devices close to the bed. Invest a few dollars in extra charging bricks and cables for both Apple and Android devices and place them in a bedside drawer. To save them having to ask write your Wi-Fi password down and display it somewhere it can be easily seen, or better still invest in a cute Wi-Fi password sign like one of these.

  1. Create a Good Guest Bathroom Experience

Going back to the idea of keeping hotel hospitality in mind, try to ensure that your guest’s bathroom experiences are as pleasant as possible. If you have a dedicated guest bathroom, ensure it is stocked with fresh-smelling clean towels, travel sized toiletries (you can usually find lots of these at the dollar store) and if you really want to go the extra mile, robes and slippers.

If your guests will be sharing a bathroom with the rest of the household, ensure that all of these things are available in their room, and they know where to find them.

  1. Add Some Finishing Touches

Finally, add a few finishing touches to help your guests feel comfortable and welcomed. A comfy chair to sit in (a bean bag would do in a pinch), fresh cut flowers, some chilled water bottles and even a streaming capable TV if you can spare one will all do just that.
