Our pets play an important role in our lives. Our families are incomplete without these loyal companions, but pets, like human family members, come with a lot of stuff! They need leashes, pet food, dishes, toys, treats, supplements, grooming supplies and more! They also need a place to call their own to sleep and relax.
To keep these items from cluttering your home, use some clever pet food and toy storage ideas to help you find a home for everything your dog or cat requires. Try these practical (and chic) ideas for keeping pet supplies organized in an unobtrusive and convenient manner.
Create a Pet Storage Station
Designate a specific area of your home for pet storage so that all of your supplies are in one convenient location. Set aside a wall of cabinetry in the entryway, mudroom, kitchen, or laundry room to store pet food, dishes, grooming supplies, and other items.
If you don’t have enough cabinets, dedicate a shelf in the hall closet or pantry to your pet, or install a stand-alone storage unit in an empty corner. Make the space more organized with hooks, baskets, and bins, and keep your pet’s toys and bed nearby so they know it’s theirs.
Pull Out Food Storage (Great for Big Dogs)
Large dogs require a lot of food, and finding a convenient place to store that massive bag of dog food can be difficult.
Make feeding time easier by placing a bin of ready-to-scoop kibble in a pull-out cabinet. Place the bin close to your pet’s bowls, so you can scoop directly into it. Consider installing a childproofing latch inside the door if your dog knows how to nose-open cabinets.
Create a Walkies Station
Create a dog walking station near a door so you can quickly leash up and go outside. Harnesses and leashes should be hung near the door, and doggy sacks, treats, and walking gear should be kept in a tote or basket. This helps to hide daily pet necessities while keeping everything in one place. Other dog grooming supplies should be stored in nearby bins and caddies.
Add a Built-in Bed
Every family member wants and needs privacy now and then, and you can give your pet with that same luxury by providing them with their own space. To keep a pet bed out of high-traffic areas and provide pets with a quiet and secure place to rest, tuck it under shelves or into small nooks. Choose a spot in the house where your pet usually hangs out, such as the laundry room or close the kitchen – or even the bedroom – and place a few of their favorite toys there as well.
Store Treats Smarter
Use decorative labels to designate specific pet treats and food storage in everyday glass jars. You can simplify storage, keep treats fresh, and make it even easier to grab what you need by replacing the original packaging with a set of airtight containers. Plus, you’ll never confuse your dog’s treats for cookies again when you’re looking for a late-night snack.
Designate a Pet Feeding Spot
To prevent water and food from spilling and spreading all over the kitchen floor, place a small mat or tray under pet food dishes and water bowls. Consider incorporating a built-in pet feeding station into a bottom cabinet or drawer, or repurpose a thrift store chest as seen above.
Terrific Toy Storage
To encourage daily play and keep toys within your pet’s reach, keep an open bin or basket near the floor level. This also helps to reinforce which toys belong to your pets and which belong to other family members. Small plastic containers within the basket can separate balls from chew toys and make the main basket easier to clean for even more dog toy storage.
Create a Pet Grooming Caddy
Gather all of your pet grooming supplies in one place. Fill a shower caddy or tote with essentials like shampoo, brushes, nail clippers, ear solution, and dental floss. It’s simple to transport your pet’s needs from room to room or take them on vacation when everything is in one place.
Don’t Forget Fur Kid First Aid
Unfortunately, our pets can become injured at any time and may require specialized first aid. Make sure you have a pet-friendly first-aid kit with cotton pads, gauze, bandages, cotton swabs, scissors, tweezers, flea and tick treatments, worming treatments, antiseptic, and sanitizer on hand. Make sure the pet-specific kit is labeled as such, so it can be distinguished from a standard first-aid kit.
Smart Pet Paperwork Storage
Using a three-ring binder or folder, keep track of important pet paperwork and vet records. It can be used to keep track of appointments, medications, veterinarian information, and notes for pet sitters. Keep the records with the rest of your family’s paperwork and documents.
