However, for now, back to those end of year tasks..;

End-of-Year Organization Tasks

Declutter as You Store Your Holiday Decor

Take a good long look at your holiday decorations before putting them away for next year. Is there anything that needs to be replaced because it’s worn out or broken? I’m not referring to sentimental objects that you want to cherish for the rest of your life. I’m referring to broken lights, dollar store trinkets that look less than great but you used as tree fillers this year and more.

The best time to do all of this is as you are taking the decorations down and packing them away. In addition to purging, lean anything that needs to be cleaned and organize the decor in a way that not only keeps it all in great shape but makes it easier to find when the holidays arrive next year.

Backup Your Holiday Photos

Take a few minutes as the holidays draw to a close to upload (and back up!) any and all images from your phone and camera! You don’t want to miss out on any of your favorite Christmas memories!

While you can certainly store the images on your computer, or even in your phone, to save on storage space, and keep the images safe in the event of a disaster like a broken phone or a hacked computer, make use of the free storage offered by Google Photos.

The Big G will keep your photos safe indefinitely and if you install their app you can get into the habit of uploading pictures there as you take them, saving lots of room on your phone and helping to ensure you never lose a snap.

Declutter Your Pantry

The chances are that you will end up with a lot of extra food (and plastic food containers) after the holidays and your cupboards, pantry and refrigerator will all be close to overflowing! Now is the time to declutter them all in preparation for a fresh start in January, (when you will probably be resolving to eating healthier) and get your pantry organized.

Don’t throw away good food though. Make a donation to a food pantry in your area. Share your bounty with your neighbors. Make a few freezer meals out of leftovers that you may use in the following months. Toss out any items that have beyond their expiration date. Make use of what you have on hand. Make an effort to be inventive.

Return Gifts Without Guilt

Got something you didn’t like for Christmas? Or know that you will never use? If something can be returned, return it and do it now, while the windows to do so are still open and before the unwanted gift gets stuffed at the back of a closet, adding to the clutter that will need to be purged later.

If you don’t know where a gift came from (so you can’t return it) consider donating it to a thrift store, or even selling it if it’s feasible to do so. Instead of paying eBay fees you could try the free to use Facebook Marketplace, just use caution, as while most transactions go off without a hitch there are scammers out there (and never meet up with anyone alone, always take a friend.)

Throw Away More Than Just Gift Wrap

As you haul out the trash bags to clear up all of that discarded gift wrap and all those empty boxes, if you look, you’ll probably find a lot of things that can be thrown away. Calendars that are about to become obsolete, expiring coupons (lots of coupons expire on 12/31), all those holiday flyers and more should be trashed now, so that there is less to declutter during that New Year’s purge.
