If you have smart children, knowing where and how to hide holiday presents can be challenging. They’re perceptive enough to pick up on small signs, and they’ll have plenty of time throughout the run-up to the holidays to rummage around for any badly hidden gifts. Every year, it seems it becomes more difficult to conceal large holiday gifts from these committed and astute children as they grow!
They might be tenacious in their hunt if they are motivated by excitement, curiosity, or the challenge of identifying your hiding spots. Do you need any help outsmarting them? Here are some suggestions for keeping your holiday gifts hidden, both from inquisitive gift recipients and anyone visiting your home in general.
Shop Strategically
A shopping trip is the first step in a successful present-hiding operation. If you’re shopping for the most popular Christmas gifts this year and aren’t careful about how, where, and when you buy them, your children will quickly figure out what you’ve purchased.
If you’re going to a store or mall to buy their gifts, wait until they’re somewhere else, such as school or a friend’s house. You can then buy and hide the gifts without fear of being discovered.
If you shop online, make sure to delete your browsing history afterwards. Make sure your children can’t access your email or online shopping accounts. Even if you don’t share a computer with your children, they may be able to access your accounts while you’re away. The same goes for your partner too, as adults can be just as inquisitive about secret holidays gifts as kids.
Keep Gifts – Even Wrapped Gifts – Out of Sight and Harm’s Way
You may be tempted to keep wrapped presents within your children’s sight but out of their reach if you have older children who are no longer waiting for Santa. You might consider storing gifts on the top shelf in a closet or above the kitchen cupboards, for example.
Inventive children may nevertheless be able to bring those presents crashing down. To get to the gifts, they could use a broom, a chair, or perilous acrobatic moves. To avoid injuries and maintain everyone’s sanity, it’s best to keep the gifts completely hidden until Christmas.
Even if it takes a little more thought and effort to hide the gifts, it will make the holidays a little safer and more peaceful.
Avoid the Obvious Hiding Spots
To outsmart intelligent youngsters, you must be unique. A quick Google search could reveal to any kid the best places to look for gifts, whether they’re looking for big or small Christmas items. That is, under a bed, in a closet, or in a garden shed. The Internet may also disclose more unusual locations, such as within a suitcase or duffle bag.
To put it another way, your best bet is to come up with an original hiding spot on your own. You can get ideas from blogs (like this one), but keep in mind that whatever you find online can also be found by your children. Your best bet is to rely on your own creativity and knowledge of your kids.
Disguise Little Gifts
Consider concealing the gifts before tucking them away in a hidden area (where you might forget about them). You could, for example, place little gifts into empty laundry detergent boxes or Tupperware containers. Small gifts could be hidden inside fake books or wrapped in socks. Hide large Christmas gifts in moving boxes or crates labeled with a bland phrase like “Tax Receipts 2020.”
Hide Gifts Where Your Kids Hate to Go
If your children are afraid of a particular location of the house, such as the attic or basement, use it to hide large Christmas presents. Even if your kids muster the courage to investigate that area, they are less likely to check it as carefully as they would in other rooms. The same idea applies to places that are “gross,” such as your underwear drawer.
Of course, the safest place to hide is somewhere they can’t get to, such as at work or in a closed trunk. A self-storage facility is also an excellent option for storing their larger gifts. There’s no way for your kids to find their gifts without your consent, thanks to walled perimeters, video surveillance, and keypad gate entry.
Make YOURSELF a Holiday Gift Treasure Map
It’s possible that even you will forget where the gifts are if your hiding places are particularly brilliant. That is why it is a good idea to keep note of where each present has been put. For example, on your computer, you can create a password-protected list with a dull name like “Budget 2021.”
This extra step will come in handy later, when you’re frantically preparing for the holidays. Instead of racking your brain to recall where you put the gifts, you can immediately retrieve them by consulting your list. It’s possible to keep Christmas presents hidden from intelligent kids—as long as you don’t outsmart yourself in the process.
