Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Cut through the clutter in your workspace with these brilliant ideas for finding what you want, when you want it.

You’re not alone if your desk is a disaster. Desk drawers are getting more use than ever before, with so many adults working from home. Fortunately, with the right tools and organizing tips, getting things back in order shouldn’t take long. Here are some of my top pro tips for desk drawer organization to get you started.

Close Those ‘Satellite Offices’

Office supplies are frequently strewn about in various locations in many homes, and in many office ‘spaces’ outside it. Little satellite offices if you like. If you want to centralize your supplies, now is the time to do so. Are there pens in almost every room, for example? Do you ever have trouble locating a postage stamp in all the clutter? Using your desk drawers as a central storage location for supplies can help your days run more smoothly.

Clear Your Desk

It’s time to clear off your desk surface as well as the interiors of your drawers, even if you’re dealing with serious mountains of files (and no judgment if you are). Remove all of the items from your desk top and place them on the floor. Measure the depth, width, and length of your drawers for dividers – more on that in a minute – while they’re empty.

Sort Your Supplies

When it comes to desk organization, the old organizing adage of sorting like items with like items still holds true. Put all of the markers in one pile, the chargers in another, and so on. This will allow you to see what you have. Use clear, durable mini-size containers to store items you know you’ll want on your desk (who doesn’t need a steady supply of pens and paper clips even in a ‘digital’ age).

Declutter the Dead Weight

Getting rid of what you don’t need will help you more easily access what you do. Here are a few clutter culprits to look out for:

  • Test all your pens and markers; throw out those that don’t work.
  • Toss random screws, miscellaneous keys to nowhere, hair ties, and other odds and ends.
  • Recycle mystery cords and chargers you haven’t used in over a year.
  • Identify duplicates and choose a favorite. (You probably don’t need two calculators or two staplers.)

Determine Drawer or Desktop Content

Personal preference dictates what goes into your desk drawers versus what should be kept on top of it, but if you use an item frequently throughout the day, such as a stapler or a highlighter, it’s best to keep it close at hand. Drawers should be used to store delicate items or items that are used infrequently. While you have any electronic devices out of the drawer, clean them. You’ll get bonus points if you also clean your computer.

Divide and Conquer

When it’s time to reorganize your desk, drawer dividers are essential, and these adjustable dividers allow you to customize the compartment sizes. Use one drawer for practical items (such as scissors, scotch tape, and a calculator) and another for more “creative” items (such as art supplies) (notepads, color markers, and the like). Separating items into compartments prevents them from rolling around and sliding to the back as soon as the drawer is closed.

Add Style

Personalize your workspace to make it more enjoyable. Add a houseplant or fresh flowers to the desk once the drawers are organized and divided and the desk surface is tidy (office greenery has been shown to improve creative problem-solving). Personal photographs can also give your day an emotional boost.

Tackle the Surroundings

Although you may have a dedicated home office, most desks are located in a room that serves multiple functions. Spend a few minutes cleaning up your living room, den, or wherever your desk is located.
