Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

If you’re hosting a Christmas lunch or a quiet family gathering this year, you’ll need to create some extra order in your home, particularly in the kitchen. The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the holiday season, and getting your kitchen organized can give you a much-needed sense of peace throughout the season.

The reality is that Christmas can be a stressful time, and if you plan on spending time in the kitchen, having an organized space will make the day go much more smoothly and allow you to organize, plan, and prepare ahead of time. With that in mind, here are some helpful hints for getting your kitchen organized in preparation for the holidays.

Organize and Clean Your Countertops

When it comes to kitchen organization, the first thing you should do is clear and organize your countertops. Nothing is more aggravating than having too much clutter on your counters or having to constantly clear items out of the way when cooking or serving meals. When you’re dishing up a Christmas dinner, you’re likely to need a lot more pots, pans, and dishes than you would on a normal weekday supper, which may quickly become aggravating and slow down the process.

The most typical items that clutter flat kitchen surfaces are daily necessities like keys, post, purses, and wallets, especially near doorways or on dining tables. If you don’t have time to pick through the clutter over the holidays (after all, who has free time over the holidays? ), one of the best and simplest methods to do so is to utilize attractive baskets or boxes to store daily clutter and free up space. Then plan to get organized in the New Year (we can help there.)

Keep Snacks on Hand

When you’re cooking, nothing is more annoying than having folks come in and ask for snacks or how long the dinner will take. When you have family and friends around and they don’t know where to look for snacks and goodies, it can be stressful.

Having some festive snacks and goodies organized in jars or tubs throughout your kitchen that are easy for people to grab on the move or that you can point people to can make things a lot easier, plus they can add to the overall festive aesthetic of your kitchen. Snacks and goodies to have on hand include a festive cookie selection, little chocolate yule logs, fun Christmas candies and chocolates, and even a Christmas themed trail mix.

Reorganize Your Refrigerator

For all those great festive leftovers and party delicacies, you’ll need some additional fridge room over the holidays. Try to use up as much of your fridge supplies as possible in the days prior up to Christmas to free up some additional room and give the fridge a thorough cleaning.

If you’re going to undertake a major pre-Christmas grocery run, returning to a mostly empty fridge will make putting everything away a lot easier, and you won’t be juggling and balancing things on top of each other. It also means you can devise a system that works best for you (meat in the bottom drawer, drinks and bottles in the door, fresh fruit on the top shelf, etc.) so that everything is easy to find when you need it, especially if you have family or friends helping out with the cooking who may not be aware of where certain items are kept.

Stock Up on Cleaning Supplies.

Any form of celebration creates a shambles, and this is especially true during Christmas. Having a well-organized kitchen will make cleanup go much more quickly and painlessly! Keep a stack of fresh, clean tea towels beside your sink, and stock up on dishwashing materials like dish soap, sponges, washing up gloves, dishwasher tablets, and garbage bags.

You should also have a food trash bin on hand in case plates with food scraps are returned. Make sure the dishwasher is empty before your guests arrive, so it can simply be loaded and turned on after dinner. Clear any worktops and keep the area next to the sink clean and clutter-free so that soiled plates can simply be deposited there.
