Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Christmas shopping season is in full swing, but you might want to pump the brakes before you hit the buy button on those gifts in your Amazon Prime shopping cart.

That funny or cute gift you are thinking about getting? It might just end up collecting dust and causing unwanted clutter in their home. Want to get them something they’ll really appreciate? Organize a “gifts-free” Christmas without presents instead.

Creating a “no real gifts” rule means you will avoid giving Christmas presents that will just take up space in someone’s home that are likely to only become clutter later. An admirable wish, but lacking the holiday spirit.

But what about giving intangible holiday gifts? A number of surveys have found that such gifts are often appreciated more than an actual physical gift under the Christmas tree.

One survey even found that one in four gifts are never used by the recipient and 1 in 5 people never use over half the holiday gifts they receive!

More often than not, the person you are shopping for would rather receive an experience-based gift than a physical one. But will that work in 2020, when so many things are subject to restrictions due to COVID 19? These restrictions seem likely to continue well in 2021 too.

The answer is yes, with a little creative thinking. And if you take the time to do that not only will your gifts be truly appreciated this year but your recipients homes will stay better organized too, a gift in itself.

To help you, I’ve put together some clutter free holiday gift ideas to get you started.

Simple Entertainment Gifts

As people are still spending more of their leisure time at home, and live events are still very much restricted, there are some gifts you can give that will be very much appreciated by entertainment lovers.

Consider a Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Shudder or an Audible subscription – all these companies and more offer them. Or, for the gamer in your life an X Box Game Pass, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Online subscription. If they are already signed up for those, digital game store gift cards are also sure to be very much appreciated, especially as there are a LOT of hot new games being released with the advent of new generation consoles.

Offer Them a Group Mental Challenge

Did you know that a number of adventure and escape room companies have begun offering a virtual escape room experience that can be completed from anywhere with an Internet connection?

Escape room challenges are great for challenging your mind and having fun with friends. And virtual escape rooms, as they are conducted via Zoom or a similar service, mean that you could gift an experience that will allow friends separated over the holidays – especially during New Year’s – to get together – and have fun together – virtually instead.

Gifts of Clever Classes

Classes and workshops as some of the best gifts you could possibly give. In the COVID-era, many experts are offering their classes online making it possible to take classes with the very best instructors wherever you live.

If you aren’t sure what your recipient would be interested in the most, consider a subscription to MasterClass. Subscribers can access scores of courses taught by world-renowned and celebrity instructors such as how to cook with Gordon Ramsey, how to finally get serious about photgraphy as they always meant to, as taught by the likes of Annie Liebowitz, singing lessons from some big name stars, writing classes with Malcolm Galdwell, Shonda Rimes and much more!

Go With Christmas Consumable Gifts

If you still aren’t sure, you really can’t go wrong consumable gifts like beer, wine, gourmet food, soap and other goods. Buy a gift basket or build your own. Just be sure to consider your loved one’s allergies and personal tastes.

Other consumable gifts include make up, candles, supplements and more. If you can find unique items that they normally wouldn’t buy, that is definitely a great option.

If possible, keep your holiday shopping local and purchase from neighborhood shops, makers and food purveyors, it will make your selections even more special. Many mom and pop retailers have expanded their online shopping options in 2020, so you can still support them without having to go out with a mask on.
