The summer weather’s here at last (yay) so while the sundresses go on and the sweaters come off, chances are your bedroom could do with a summery makeover too. Here are some simple ways to add a touch of summer style to your sleeping space.
Lighten Up
It’s no fun trying to sleep in a stifling, hot room, so trade in your thick winter curtains for something lighter and airier. Sheer window treatments made of natural cottons or linens are a terrific way to bring more light into a space while keeping the heat out, and permeable materials like these also allow for better air circulation.
If you prefer complete darkness while sleeping, consider faux shutters with light control or a thermal blackout blind that will reflect heat out of the room on hot summer evenings.
Speaking of light, now is a great time to review your bedroom lighting scheme in general.
Lighting for any room, including the bedroom, is best done in layers.
- Ambient light (also called general light) serves the same function as natural sunlight, bathing your entire room in light.
- Accent light highlights visual features you wish to showcase, such as artwork.
- Task lighting is a more focused type of lighting that makes reading, writing, sewing, and other tasks easier.
The most effective lighting plans incorporate all three types of lights to meet the needs of those using the room. As your build your layers of light, remember that bedroom lighting should create a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere using soft, flattering ambient light while providing bright spots in the places where they are needed.
Swap Out Your Bedding
With the warmer weather, you can put away your heavy blankets, winter duvets, and warm flannel sheets and replace them with breathable cotton bedlinen, which will keep you cooler at night.
Out-of-season bedding should be stored in a linen closet, while your best thick sheets should be kept close at hand in a fashionable storage trunk at the foot of the bed for nights when the temperature drops later in the summer.
Declutter and Simplify
Remove any clutter that has accumulated during the winter months — too much stuff can visibly weigh down a space and make it less restful to sleep in. Remove any items that don’t belong in the bedroom, de-clutter the floor space, and store out-of-season clothing and bedding. Over the summer, roll up heavy winter rugs and leave floors bare; nothing beats walking around barefoot on hot afternoons.
Refresh the Room with Coastal Style
Nothing says summer quite like a coastal scheme, so if your bedroom’s looking dark and gloomy, why not consider a nautical refresher? This theme calls for a lot of bright white and coastal blue, so go for whitewashed walls or paneling with bare wooden floorboards and ticking stripes, chambray, and nautical prints. Display favorite artwork, coastal postcards, and beachcombing finds on a floating shelf.
Go For Bold and Bright
Give your bedroom a colorful makeover and you’ll wake up happy every day. Colors that are bright and cheery are a great pick-me-up, and you can be as bold (or as subtle) as you want. Begin with a new set of bedlinen in a bright print like this one as the primary focus of your summer bedroom decor scheme, then add more accent brights throughout the room, such as a vivid rug or piece of wall art, as well as cushions, blankets, lighting, and even a brightly-colored headboard.
Bring the Outdoors In
A touch of greenery will do wonders at freshening up a scheme. Vibrant leafy greens look fabulous against pure white and will instantly make the space feel cool and fresh. Summer blooms – everything from pale orchids, to pretty lavender or sophisticated roses – can all be used to add a natural touch of summer to your bedroom space, as well as some wonderful natural fragrancing.
