Taya’s Top Tips for Holiday Kitchen Organization

The first of the big national winter holidays is just a few weeks away (I know, this year has FLOWN by) and the chances are that you’ll be doing plenty in the kitchen to prepare for it. Whether the feast is for 6 people or 16, cooking for, and/or hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be a time-consuming and messy undertaking. However, having a well-organized kitchen will help you during busy cooking times and allow you to streamline and manage the process.

The kitchen is where you keep all of your cookware, utensils, appliances, and food, and because there are so many things there, it’s simple for it to get cluttered to the point that it’s practically unusable. Which is obviously a bad thing if you have committed to cook for the whole family.

But don’t worry, before you consider resorting to whoever will deliver on Thanksgiving (which is not a lot of restaurants BTW) I’ve got some of my best advice for decluttering and organizing  your kitchen so you can prepare all that lovely food for the holidays more easily—and maybe even enjoy it.

Build a Kitchen Command Center

Your kitchen will become more organized if you create a central location for your Christmas shopping lists, plans, and calendars – aka a kitchen command center. Consider adding a whiteboard calendar, hooks for keys, a chalkboard, or a magnetic board to hang lists. Additionally, wall-mounted organizers leave counter space free of paperwork, pens, and other assorted ‘stuff’ so it can be utilized for preparing meals.

Purge and Declutter

Purging is the best way to get organized for the holidays. Get rid of anything that is expired, empty, or that you won’t use to make room in your fridge and pantry for larger quantities of food and leftovers.

Doing this will also help you at the grocery store when it comes time to do that big holiday shop, as you will now know exactly what you do and do not need to buy.

Tackle Those Cluttered Kitchen Drawers

Every household has an overstuffed utensil drawer and a catchall drawer filled with kitchen odds and ends that hardly opens. In order to make it easier to access things while making dinner, organize items in drawers by dividing them into compartments with dividers or inserts.

Invest in a Utensil Holder For The Counter – Or the Wall

When your “things” are contained, it creates kitchen order. a countertop utensil holder is a great way to do this.

Put the kitchen utensils you use the most—like spatulas, tongs, and mixing spoons—on the counter in a utensil holder so they are readily accessible. No more digging around in drawers. There are various chic designs to choose from that will also give your kitchen a wonderful decorative touch. Even better than a counter top utensil holder? A wall holder like the one you can find here.

In the same vein you can also consider adding a Lazy Susan to your pantry or kitchen cupboard. It can hold just about anything from cans to spices and oils and is also perfect for higher cabinets when you need quick access.

Clear Counter Clutter Too

Where to put countertop gadgets like toasters, coffee makers, and blenders is a common problem. You should only keep items that you use regularly on your kitchen counter to ensure maximum efficiency.

The same is true for pots and pans; a fantastic solution is an overhead pot rack. A corner rack or étagère is a useful way to store and display less-used items if you have the room.

Make Use of Hooks

Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows that I am a big fan of hooks for all kinds of organizational purposes. This is certainly true of a kitchen you are organizing to help you cook a better big holiday meal.

Cabinet doors can do double duty, if you install hooks on the inside or under upper cabinets. They’re the perfect place to hang mugs, pans, dish towels, and more. You can also use them to make use of unused wall space to offer extra storage that still keeps things close to hand.
