Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

These aren’t easy times. Many of us are staying at home – lots of us are working, taking care of the family and still finding that the news is all becoming a little too much to watch more than a few times a day and some of your social media ‘friends’ are possibly adding to your gloom by sharing some even more upsetting material, a lot of it (sadly) false. That’s why, whatever else you have to do while navigating this new life we’ve all been thrust into is take some time to practice self-care.

There are some very good reasons to do this, whatever else is going on in the world:

Improved resistance to disease

There is evidence that most self-care activities activate your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). What this means is that your body goes into a restful, rejuvenating mode, helping it to fortify its immune system. Which is a BIG bonus right now.

Better physical health

Similarly to the previous point, with better self-care often comes fewer niggling little illnesses; colds, cases of flu and upset stomachs. Less stress and a better immune system can surely help you feel more physically able and strong inside and out.

More to give

When you’re good to yourself, you might think you’re being selfish. In truth, self-care gives you the resources you need to be compassionate to others as well. Giving compassion is a bit like filling a bucket; you can’t fill someone else’s if you don’t have enough of your own!

While everyone is stuck at home, and most of the ‘fun’ stores are closed you might think that practicing some self-care – and doing it daily, is hard. But that’s not the case. Here are just fourteen great ideas to get you started.

  • Take a nap – not a long one, just enough to rest your mind and body.
  • Do a home facial – you’ll find some great tips for doing that here.
  • Read a book you’ve always been meaning to.
  • Binge watch a new TV show (yes, even Tiger King if you like)
  • Draw yourself a soothing bubble bath and CHILL for a while.
  • Snuggle with your furry friend
  • Make handmade cards for loved ones who you can’t be with right now.
  • Take all those old photos you have stored in boxes (or stuffed in drawers) and make a collage of some great memories.
  • Dance – because no one is watching!
  • Get outside – as long as you follow social distancing guidelines no one is stopping you from getting outside for a while. Just 15 minutes will make a huge difference to your state of mind and the Vitamin D from the sun is something your body really needs right now.
  • Journals, blogs, or diaries are all a great way to reflect on what’s going on in your life. Whether you’re stressed out or just want to take a moment to process the day, writing is a great way to take care of your health and well-being.
  • Eat well – Opt for wholegrains, fruits, and veggies to give your body grade-A fuel for whatever the day has in store.
  • Liven up your surroundings – if your home is starting to feel like a prison, change things up. ‘Shop’ your home for decor inspirations (what do you have tucked in the attic or basement? I bet you’ve forgotten) and take some time to remake your space in little ways that will cheer you up. And don’t let things get too cluttered, as clutter only adds to stress
  • Have faith – whatever your religion or beliefs, have faith that things will get better. Lots of great people are working so hard right now to make that happen. And while we can’t speed up a return to a more normal life being thankful for what you do still have will make things at least a little better.
