Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

As a professional organizer, I’ve seen a lot of underwear drawers—hundreds, to be exact. And the truth is, most of them tell the same story: they’re a chaotic mix of mismatched socks, tangled bras, and forgotten items. We tell ourselves we’ll get around to organizing it on the next laundry day, but let’s be honest, that day never comes.

But what if I told you that a little bit of underwear drawer organization is all you need to start your mornings off right? It only takes 10 minutes to tackle this small but impactful space. It’s a quick win that can help you feel more in control of your mornings and your entire day. A little effort goes a long way, and I promise your mornings will be a little brighter (or at least a bit less hectic!) if you follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Do an Honest Accounting

Empty the entire contents of your drawers onto a flat surface—your bed is perfect for this. This isn’t just about making a pile; it’s about taking an honest inventory of what you own. As you go, immediately remove anything that is worn, stained, ripped, or threadbare. Be ruthless! Also, get rid of anything that doesn’t fit or that you know, deep down, will never be worn again. An organized drawer should only hold items you actually use and love.

Step 2: Remove the Paper Trail

At some point, it became acceptable to use the underwear drawer as a filing cabinet. It’s a strange but common phenomenon. Most of the drawers I’ve seen have crumpled receipts, gum wrappers, errant mail, and other miscellaneous items that have no business being there. As you sort through your pile on the bed, remove anything that isn’t wearable and belongs somewhere else. This simple action will make a huge difference.

Step 3: Make the Drawer Shine

You wouldn’t put clean laundry into a dirty dresser, so why would you do the same for your intimates? Once the drawer is empty, wipe down the interior with a damp rag and a mild household cleaner to remove any dust and grime that has accumulated. Then, add a spritz of fabric refresher to give it a clean, long-lasting scent that won’t damage your items.

Step 4: Divide and Conquer

Drawer dividers are a low-cost, high-impact investment that will help you maintain order and tidiness. Set aside specific sections for underwear, bras, socks, and other specialty items like hosiery or pajamas. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the items you wear the most are up front and center. This prevents the need for digging around and creating a jumbled mess just 24 hours later.

Step 5: Master Your Folding Skills

Don’t worry, I’m not proposing anything complicated (sorry, Marie Kondo!). But if you have a small drawer, you can maximize your space and help bras keep their shape by folding one cup into the other. For socks, you can simply fold or roll each pair together to keep them from getting separated in the drawer.

Step 6: Give Up on Your Misplaced Socks

Life is simply too short to waste time looking for missing socks. Here’s a pro-tip to avoid the dreaded lost-socks epidemic: buy only one style and color of everyday sock. Problem solved! For those who prefer a more extensive sock wardrobe, make sure to always keep pairs together, either by rolling them or using a clip.

Step 7: Donate and Do Good

Have you ever wondered what to do with worn-out personal items? H&M has a free textile recycling program that accepts any clothing in any condition. Or, if you have warm socks or other usable clothing you want to get rid of, you can donate them to your local homeless shelter. It’s a great way to keep your old items out of the landfill and help those in need.
