There’s something about being able to put perfectly wrapped gifts under a Christmas tree that makes you so proud. But lots of people just never seem to manage it, and resort to adding all their gifts to generic – and often rather expensive, gift bags instead.
It does not have to be that way this year though. Here are five of my top Christmas gift wrapping tips to help you wrap gifts in a way that will make you proud and delight their recipients too!
Opt for High-Quality Wrapping Paper
When you’re selecting wrapping paper, don’t go for the cheap stuff. Less expensive paper tears easily which makes it difficult to work with and translates into an ugly wrapping job or worse: having to re-wrap your gifts.
If you already have cheap paper you don’t want to waste, use it on items with standard-shaped boxes. Steer clear of toys and stuffed animals that are lumpy and soft — weak paper makes holes a problem (especially if your kids like to peek at their gifts) — or find sturdy boxes to pack them in to make up for the bad wrapping paper.
Use Unique Christmas Gift Toppers
To make a gift look truly elegant, you need a good gift topper. It can be a bow, a snowflake, or a handmade gift tag that doubles as a tree ornament — anything that makes your gift unique and classy.
You can even set aside a Saturday ‘crafternoon’ with the kids to make your toppers more personal. If you’d rather buy something, make your embellishment another gift to enhance the gift inside.
For instance, if you’re giving your niece a coloring book, tie a pack of colored pencils to the package with a fancy bow. If you’re giving your mother a jewelry box, make a piece of fashion jewelry part of the gift wrapping embellishment.
Classy Christmas Wrapping for Grown Up Gifts
A snowman bouncing down a snow-covered hill or Santa with rosy cheeks leading his reindeer through the night sky is charming, but not classy for grown up gifts, and gift wrap featuring such things should be reserved for the kids’ presents only.
For adult Christmas gifts to be pristine and professional looking, choose simple wrapping paper in solid colors. Red, green, and silver are classics. If you want them to be a little more dynamic, branch out to icy blue or cream with a little bit of texture.
Practice Mindful Measuring
How well you measure your wrapping paper before cutting it can make or break the beauty of your package. You don’t want too little and you don’t want too much. To do it right, gently roll your package in the paper from end to end before you cut it. Make sure every spot is covered and that there’s just enough paper to fold over the edges to make a neat seal when you tape it.
Top Gift Taping Tips
Taping on the outside of gifts doesn’t look very sleek, so make double-sided tape your new best friend until gift wrapping is done. It won’t make it look fancy, but it keeps your wrapping clean and neat. If you have to use regular tape, make a loop with each piece so the sticky side is on the outside and you can tape the paper so that it’s not visible.
