Spider Plant
Spider plants are very good at removing formaldehyde from the air in your home. Removing what??? That’s right, formaldehyde, the average home has lots of it. It’s on all sorts of things you bring into your home including paper bags, waxed paper, facial tissues, paper towels, napkins, particle board, plywood paneling, mattresses, some furniture and all kinds of synthetic fabrics.
Spider plants can help remove all that nasty formaldehyde – which, if left unchecked can can cause the following:
- watery eyes.
burning sensations of the eyes, nose, and throat.
coughing.
wheezing.
nausea.
skin irritation.
In addition to formaldehyde, spider plants can target carbon monoxide and other toxic air impurities as well. Even better a spider plant is super easy to care for -great for those with a less than green thumb – and can live happily in shadier spots in your home since it doesn’t like to be placed under direct sunlight.
Lavender
Lavender is more than just a pretty purple flower; it’s a plant that offers an array of health benefits. Its subtle and sweet scent is renowned for its calming effects on the mind, making it a go-to ingredient for stress relief products such as bath salts, skincare creams, soaps, and candles.
If you’re looking for a natural way to improve the quality of your sleep, placing a lavender plant in your bedroom could do wonders. Inhaling the soothing fragrance of lavender has been found to ease restlessness, nervousness, anxiety, depression and insomnia, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to promote a sense of tranquility and relaxation in their living space.
Snake Plant
Another great houseplant for the bedroom, the snake plant (also known as the “Mother-in-Law’s Tongue”) is among one of the most popular choices for improving indoor air quality. It actually gets most of its job done at night, converting carbon dioxide into oxygen as you sleep.
Snake plants also remove all sorts of toxins from the air including trichloroethylene, formaldehyde, toluene, benzene and xylene. To optimize its air purifying power throughout your entire home, you’ll likely need more than one plant. Plan to get anywhere from 6 to 8 snake plants that are of waist-high height for optimal air purification.
Rosemary
Rosemary is a herb that has been used in folk medicine for centuries to help improve concentration and memory. It turns out that there may be some merit to this claim since a study conducted by Northumbria University in the UK found that people who were exposed to the scent of rosemary essential oil performed better on tests and questionnaires compared to people who were exposed to no scent at all. So adding one to your home office desk may boost your productivity as well as make the space more attractive in general.
Peace Lily
Peace lilies will really compliment your home decor in the summer when their beautiful white flowers are in full bloom, but that’s not all that they can do. This pretty and powerful houseplant is a master of air pollutant removal – working hard to absorb ammonia, benzene, xylene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene throughout your home.
These houseplants also work well as home decorating pieces. Pretty peace lilies can make a gorgeous addition to any dining table, side table or entryway table and are a favorite of home organizer (such as myself) as they clear the air and quickly beautify odd corners or empty spaces that need to be adorned but not cluttered up.
