The kitchen has been a place, for many years now, where contemporary, elegant, sophisticated and simple – maybe even a little stark – designs and decor have seemed to be the choice of the majority of homeowners. But as we are now fully integrated into the idea of spending a lot more time in our own kitchens, and the need to spend far more time at home, just with family, the cozy kitchen is finding a renewed place in the hearts of homeowners.
Which makes sense. With everything kind of crazy in the world outside, what could be better than a cozy, welcoming kitchen space where you can create your best culinary work or simply enjoy a coffee with your significant other (or bake with the kids)?
In 2022, the kitchen really should be a place filled with fun, warmth, creativity, comfort and joy. A warm escape from the world that also serves a very practical purpose. With all this in mind, here are some tips for styling your very own cozy kitchen.
Make Room For (More) Comfortable Seating
Your kitchen won’t be truly cozy unless it has comfortable seating. After all, if you want your kitchen to be a nice place to spend time, it needs to have a pleasant spot to take the load off.
I recommend centering the seating around a single piece of furniture – like an island or small dining table. If you have the space for an eat-in kitchen, but have never bothered with one before, this is a simple way to create a cozy kitchen with relative ease.
Even if your kitchen lacks space, you can still give your kitchen more seating depth. Use a portable island or small table to expand your counter space, and select a few barstools or chairs to place along them. This way, your family can grab a healthy breakfast or catch up over a mid-afternoon snack in comfort, and you can also add an extra shot of practical style to your kitchen space at the same time.
Bring in Some Color
Want to save time while still bringing some new personality and cozy warmth into your kitchen? Try picking up a few gallons of paint and adding a new color to your walls! A fresh paint job will give your kitchen a new sense of character and comfort.
To add a bit more flair, choose a bold color for a focus wall, and paint the rest of the walls a more subdued shade. Alternately you take a look at what are termed autumnal pastels – shades of orange, light browns, reds, blues, grays and more – as they will add warmth without being so heavy and dark they will look out of place in the warmer months.
Reconsider Your Kitchen Lighting
After you paint your kitchen, it’s time to reconsider your existing lighting fixtures. It may be time to replace the light bulbs with something brighter – sunlight lightbulbs are great – or to spruce them up with new shades. Changing the lighting in your kitchen is a simple way to brighten up the space.
Natural lighting is also something you can take advantage of. If your windows are covered up by heavy drapery or big blinds, brightening your cozy kitchen can be as simple as opening them up!
For extra privacy, use sheer panels as ‘day drapes’. These will allow light to flow through your window in the daytime while still providing you with an extra layer of protection from nosy neighbors!
Go Natural
A cozy kitchen isn’t only about having a small space or the feeling of warmth. It’s also about having a sense of nature, which can come from living things like plants! A few well-places plants is a great way to make your kitchen feel alive.
There are dozens of low-maintenance plants available that will look great in your home! You can even decorate your window sill with planted herbs or other edible plants. That way, you can level up your kitchen decor while filling your space with tasty home-grown produce.
Declutter
Do you find yourself avoiding spending too much time in your kitchen due to the mess on your countertops? You are not alone. Decluttering your kitchen will not only restore order and make it a more practical space to work in as a cook, but a nice place to spend time in general.
Decluttering a very messy kitchen – or simply one where you have accumulated too much stuff – can be a daunting prospect, so it’s okay to start small, taking things one cupboard, one drawer or one counter at a time.
