We all know how hard it is to get rid of that cute top that you wore out two years ago and got a million compliments on. However, it’s important to repurpose your wardrobe and purge those items that you don’t ever wear, at least once a season.

For many of us, clothes have a certain sentimental value based on the memories we’ve created or how we felt in them, and in can be hard to let them go. The same is often true if we paid more than usual for them! But the bottom line is that if you can’t remember the last time you wore it, it’s probably time to get rid of it. And now that summer is here it’s a great time to tackle this project

Why Purge?

Purging your closet will not only allow you more storage but it will allow you to find what truly fits your style. I’m not going to lie, purging your closet can be extremely difficult. You may have an emotional attachment to a shirt or pair of shoes. It’s very important to separate your feelings when you are purging your wardrobe. Focus solely on the facts: Does it still fit well? Does it match your current style? Is it still in good condition?

Keep. Trash. Donate.

When purging your closet, it’s important to have a plan. If you don’t have a plan set in place, your clothes and shoes will take over your entire room. When sorting, I recommend placing items into three piles: keep, trash and donate.

Having three piles will keep you organized and keep the process moving faster. Go through every single item in your closet and place into one of the piles (yes, even the pair of expensive heels that you wore twice but hurt your feet). Bottom line: be ruthless.

Less Is More

You don’t need every single piece in your closet either. Odds are you have multiple clothing items that resemble each other in your wardrobe because you’ve forgotten what you have. The bright side is that your style hasn’t changed, but unfortunately this only creates more chaos in your life. You’d be surprised how little clothes you need to make multiple outfits. Remember: less is more.

Simplify Your Life

Now is the fun part: putting your items back. You can finally organize your closet to fit your needs and lifestyle.

I recommend placing like items together and separating them by color. It may sound silly, but you will no longer have to stare at the hundreds of pieces you have and think “I have nothing to wear.” You’ll be able to find exactly what you need in seconds. Trust me, life is so much easier when you have outfits that you are confident in wearing and are easily accessible.

Now that you have my helpful tips, spend some time over the weekend to commit to a closet clean out. Your closet will be ready for any season and your life really will be easier!
